Introduction

Picture
The world’s mountains encompass some of the most spectacular landscapes, a great diversity of species and habitat types, and distinctive human communities. Mountains occur on all continents, in all latitude zones, and within all the world’s principal biome types. Mountains provide freshwater for more than half of humanity, and are, in effect, the water towers of the world.

The importance of mountain and forest ecosystems cannot be overemphasized. With threats to biodiversity at all sides and habitats continue to decline in extent and integrity. Five principal pressures directly driving biodiversity loss are: habitat change, overexploitation, pollution, invasive alien species and climate change.

The Philippines is a home to a diversity of species that rely wholly or partly on the mountain and forest ecosystems for survival. Identifying critical sites for biodiversity conservation remains crucial and urgent as evident in the number of threatened species that the country has. It is critical that we achieve placing biodiversity in the mainstream of decision-making in government, the private sector and other institutions from the local to international scales.

This Social Mobilization and Social Marketing Plan intend to inform and educate the youth sector on biodiversity conservation in the mountainous regions of Lobo, Batangas. It will specifically focus on increasing the awareness of seventy percent (70%) of DEVCOM and Chemistry (plus other relevant courses) college students in Batangas State University (BSU) Main Campus in Batangas City on the protection and conservation of threatened floral and faunal species in Lobo, Batangas in a period of one (1) month (August 24 to September 24, 2011).

The proponents of these plans envision empowering these college students to support the conservation efforts being undertaken by the BSU Tropical Forestry Program in their Lobo Campus. For this empowerment to succeed there is a need to arouse their interest about the significance of protecting and conserving threatened species in the Municipality. Subsequently, an increase in their awareness will inspire them to devote studies and their undergraduate thesis on biodiversity conservation in Lobo.
